Porta Press | 2-in-1 Tube Slotting Tool

Porta Press Overview:

  • Versatile Usage: Can be used as a single station or multiple units can be installed like the Gang Buster. Ideal for light-duty applications, it can replace a massive press brake for tonnage and performance in light-duty punching. Consider the Porta Press as an alternative to the OBI punch press.

  • Compact & Lightweight: Weighs 150 lbs, making it easy to move around the shop. In contrast, the traditional OBI weighs 1,000 lbs and becomes a permanent fixture.

  • Adjustable Frame: Offers 5” of vertical adjustment with a maximum open height of 10” and a minimum of 5”. The OBI typically offers only 2” of adjustment for similar tonnage.

  • Variable Ram Stroke: Ranges from .625” to 3.5” across various tonnages. Longer strokes are generally preferred as they exceed the typical OBI stroke.

  • Cylinders: Double-acting cylinders are available to pull open the die set like the OBI, equipped with a spigot. Single-acting cylinders push down, and the die set is opened by springs.

Safety

Instant retraction of press cylinder when foot paddle released.

  • Instant retraction saves fingers and secondly products and equipment from misfire.

Hookup

  • Air compressor is all that is required.

  • Quick connect plastic hose makes hook up simple.

Right Sized

  • Porta Press C-frame and cylinder weigh approx. 150 lb (Easy to move by hand)

  • Table top design allows easy work space configuration.

  • Porta Press conforms to work space and materials.

  • Cell manufacturing workhorse.

Versatility

  • Greater range of motion of ram for a wider range of applications.

  • Modular workstation for flexible manufacturing plant.

  • Quick change die block for tooling and die clamping. Single minute die change with perfect alignment.

Maintenance

  • Porta Press is virtually maintenance free when the supplied regulator/oiler/separator is maintained.

  • No mechanical parts or clutch assemblies to brake or require alignment.

  • No jamming at bottom of stroke from eccentric ram.

FAQ About Our Porta Press

1. What is the C-frame clearance top to bottom at rear of opening?

  • The opening at the back of the C-frame is 6".
  • If you notch the top of the die set you can another 1/2" depending how deep you want to go.

2. What is the width of the press internal and external to the C-frames?

  • The standard press width is 6.5" inside of the C-frame and 10.5" to the outside.
  • We can change the inside width as long as this does not compromise the tonnage requirements?
  • Add 4" to the internal width to get the O.D. of the assembly.

3. Number of days to delivery.

  • Usually 14 days for a C-frame and ram assembly.
  • Tooling to go in the Porta Press is quoted per job.
  • We usually have stock of small shears and notching tools.

4. What is the total weight of assembled unit?

  • Approx. 150 - 175lb (not including the bench)
  • The bench weights approx. 75 lb

5. How is the Porta Press secured to the bench?

  • The assembly will come with bolt holes drilled and tapped into the 1/4" top plate on the bench and fixtures for securing the Porta Press C-frame to it ready for use.

6. What does the Punch Tools's bench look like? What are the dimensions?

  • The Porta Press bench is typically 34" high and 18" square on top with a flat top surface. The working height for the operator of the Porta Press will be approx. 38".

7. What does double/single acting mean?

  • Single acting only pushes down, with little power on the return stoke.
  • Double acting has the same power curve on the return stroke as on the power stroke.
  • The double acting cylinders have a spigot and are designed to pull open a die set; this will replace the OBI mechanical type of press.
  • Please note that the main power tonnage is only on the power stroke segment.
  • The remainder of the stroke has only 20% of the rated tonnage.

8. Why is there a hole in the base?

  • The hole in the base is simply for slug exit.
  • A solid plate, called a quick change die block, is put on top that is usually 1 1/4" thick (6.5" W x 6"L) and provides a flat surface for the die set to sit on.
  • The quick change die block is held in place with rear stopper and set screws through the side C-frame in the middle of the front legs.

9. How do you attach a die set to the base of the Porta Press frame?

  • The design is for a quick change die block format.
  • The bottom 1 1/4" plate is precision machined to slide in and out of the center of the press so that no alignment is required with the die set.
  • The intent is to attach the die set to the quick change die block the first time and thereafter no alignment is required.
  • To complete the attachment, the toolmaker must perform the initial alignment and then tap and drill holes through the bottom of the die set into the quick change die block. Then the entire assembly can be withdrawn from the press by releasing the side set screws, pulling the assembly out the front and returning into place with no further alignment required.

10. How do you adjust the stroke of the cylinder?

  • The cylinder stroke is fixed and cannot be changed.
  • To adjust the working range the cylinder is threaded into the upper base. Simply use a quick disconnect air hose to the top of the cylinder to disconnect and spin the cylinder up or down to the desired height.
  • 5" of travel are available. A locking collar is provided to hold the cylinder firmly in the proper position.
